Your First Year – A Beekeeping Course for Beginners<\/strong><\/p>\n

Are you curious about honey bees?\u00a0 Would you like to learn more about bees, how to raise them, and how to keep them fat and happy?\u00a0 Join Julie Tennis on December 2nd for a free introductory session to kick off her year-long course.<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>and an overview of the year-long course.<\/p>\n

The full course will begin January 6 and meet the first Wednesday of every month through December 7, 2016.\u00a0 Each session includes an hour-long lecture and a half-hour for Q&A.\u00a0 Cost for the full course is $75.\u00a0 Individual sessions are $7\/session.\u00a0 The session topics are:<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>January – A Brief History of Beekeeping: \u00a0including strains of honey bee and where\/how to acquire your first colony<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>February – Equipment:\u00a0 hive parts, gear and tools (Note:\u00a0 focus will be on Langstroth hives; other hive systems will be mentioned but not covered in detail.)<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>March – Honey Bee Biology:\u00a0 queen, worker, drone, from egg to bee, and roles in the colony<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>April – Setting Up Your Apiary:\u00a0 where to place your hive and how to introduce new bees<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>May – Botany and Pollination:\u00a0 what bees eat and how that is important for us all<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>June – Swarms:\u00a0 what they are, how to avoid them, what to do when they happen<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>July – Hive Inspections:\u00a0 how to keep an eye on the health of your colonies<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>August – Pests and Pathogens:\u00a0 what can hurt your bees and how to manage your colonies to avoid losses (Note:\u00a0 Julie is a treatment-free beekeeper and will not be discussing chemical treatments against pests and pathogens.)<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>September – Honey:\u00a0 what it is and how to process it for human consumption<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>October – Wax:\u00a0 what it is and how to process it, how to make candles and salves<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>November – Winter Caretaking:\u00a0 feeding your bees and keeping them out of harm’s way<\/p>\n
